Passing Through

The roll came back with something I wasn’t expecting. What began as an exploration of form and tone revealed something more defined—five ways of seeing how people exist within space, or sometimes, how they don’t. Not staged. Not dramatic. 1 — FormAt Collins Square, the spiral staircase draws the eye without asking for attention. Its curves repeat. People pass, occasionally noticing, rarely stopping.
2 — PauseAt Southern Cross Station, movement slows. Passengers wait along the V/Line platforms. Above them, the roof curves with intent, guiding the space more than the people within it.
3 — PresenceAt the State Library Victoria, people remain, but with purpose. They sit. Read. Focus. The space frames behaviour through symmetry and repetition.
4 — IsolationFrom above, a man sits alone on a bench. He looks at his phone—waiting, or passing time. The space holds him, but offers nothing back.
5 — AbsenceA ramp leads into a car park. No cars. No movement. No sound. The lines suggest direction, but nothing follows.
ClosingAcross all five, the feeling stays consistent. The spaces function. Whether filled, paused, or empty, they do not rely on presence to define them.
