Neon Lights in Box Hill – Chasing Light, Layer by LayerIt started on a cold winter night, the kind where you can see your breath hanging in the air and the streets seem sharper, quieter. Box Hill’s neon lights came alive against the dark, buzzing in reds, blues, and pinks. I set out to capture them—not just as they were, but as I felt them—layered, textured, alive through multiple exposures.
On some nights, the neon seemed almost too eager—piling on colours, shapes, and letters until the scene was a chaotic symphony. With these, I learned restraint. Two exposures instead of four. Fewer layers, more breathing space, letting the light speak for itself.
Other times, a sign stood alone—simple, understated, a single stroke of light in the darkness. These became my creative playgrounds. I added more layers, blending the glow with street textures, sometimes drawing in the urban background to give the composition a stronger narrative.
Not all discoveries were out on the streets. Some of the most striking neon signs were hidden inside the Box Hill Central shopping centre, glowing quietly in shopfronts and food stalls. These unexpected gems became part of the series, adding variety to the collection.
The project took weeks to complete. Some scenes called for reshoots, some for a complete rethink. Each frame became a conversation—between abundance and simplicity, between what I saw and what I imagined.
In the end, it became more than just a set of neon light photographs. It was an exploration of patience, discovery, and listening to the city’s quiet pulse. Sometimes, the best stories aren’t written in ink, but in the soft hum of neon against the winter night. Other times, they appeared unexpectedly — like the neon gems hidden inside the shopping centre, quietly glowing, waiting to be noticed. Life has a way of working like that too: the things we chase can be beautiful, but the treasures we stumble upon often surprise us the most.
Neon doesn’t just light the streets — it stains them with dreams, if only for a moment.
